On 10 October 2024, the Restena Foundation held its seventh CyberDay.lu. This annual event; dedicated to cybersecurity for research and education; was also broadcast live on the event website. The 2024 edition brought together 105 participants, including BTS students from the Lycée Guillaume Kroll (LGK) in Esch-sur-Alzette, and attracted just under 50 views on the live streaming. From Belval or their (home)office, everyone was made aware of the cybersecurity issues.
The morning of presentations began with the opening speech by Mika Lauhde, Head of Technology, International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) with a focus on the digital transformation affecting all institutions and companies worldwide and its features in the humanitarian area.
A diverse range of presentations
A diverse range of presentations On the stage of the Skip Pavilion, there was, as usual, a succession of insights and expertise of cybersecurity specialists. For the 2024 edition, Hacknowledge, Streff and the NATO Support and Procurement Agency joined BEE SECURE, la Luxembourg House of Cybersecurity (le Computer Incident Response Center Luxembourg - CIRCL), Restena and Telindus who have been involved for several years. Together, they raised awareness and trained participants in various challenges.
- Initial access attacks, representing the entry point for many cybercriminals seeking to exploit vulnerabilities and establish a foothold within your systems.
- Best practices to meet data confidentiality and governance requirements in a multi-cloud approach.
- The emergence of passkeys, announcing a revolutionary shift in online authentication.
- The storage of information outside traditional file systems.
- The sustainability of digital data, the amount of which and the need to store it are increasing considerably. • Understanding DDoS threats, actors, impacts and defence mechanisms, with a focus on the European Enhancing Cybersecurity Services for the Luxembourgish Research and Education community - LuCySe4RE project, which aims to improve protection against the cybersecurity risks faced by the Luxembourgish research and education community.
Alongside the conference, several entities took part in the exhibitor area organised for the occasion. BEE SECURE, the Digital Learning Hub, Hacknowledge, The Luxembourg House of CyberSecurity and Streff were all able to present their services, training and activities in the field of cybersecurity in greater detail.
A mascot in the CyberDay.lu team
This year, a new personality took part in the event, comfortably seated on the speakers' desk: a stuffed raccoon. Its presence was no accident. The qualities attributed to this little animal symbolise some of the qualities we should all have when acting online: curiosity, intelligence, ingenuity, adaptability and self-defence. An ideal spokesperson for the event's key message: ‘Knowledge is the power to prevent computer security incidents’.
It will also support the Restena Foundation in all its future efforts to raise awareness. All that remains is to find a name for it. Participants in CyberDay.lu were asked to help with this task, and some suggestions were collected at the end of the event.
Europe rallied for cyber security
CyberDay.lu 2024 is organised in the framework of the European CyberSecurity Month (ECSM). This annual awareness campaig, organised by the European Cyber Security Agency (ENISA), the European Commission and the Member States, is being rolled out in Luxembourg through a national campaign coordinated by the Luxembourg House of Cybersecurity as part of the autumn edition of CYBERSECURITY Week Luxembourg (CSWL).
The European association GÉANT - managing the pan-European research network of which Restena is a member - also relays the European initiative to the research and innovation community in a campaign entitled “Your brain is the first line of defence”!
