Challenges
With tens or even hundreds of passwords and/or usernames that you need to manage between your personal and professional accounts, it is difficult to find and then to memorise unique combinations of digits, letters, symbols, upper and lower-case letters, etc., while also remembering the relevant account. This task is a real mental workout, as well as being essential in order to authenticate yourself securely. It requires a great deal of time and can be somewhat irritating.
Whilst the quantity of passwords and usernames to be defined for each individual is enough to make them dizzy, for a business managing a website that requires authentication, the inherent management of these accounts is also daunting. Opening, closing, maintaining and securing access to hundreds, thousands, or even millions of user accounts, to name just a few tasks, can be a real headache.
Features
The Restena Foundation offers an authentication and access authorisation service for dedicated websites for the education and research community in Luxembourg beyond the resources hosted there. With this service, the creation and management of user accounts is simplified both for employees in the research and education sector and for website managers.
Access to identification attributes
Every website required to authenticate users from the research and education sectors in Luxembourg can subscribe to eduID and request access to the identification attributes provided by the education, research or cultural establishments subscribing to the service.
After a simple service configuration, the eduID infrastructure takes charge of real authentication.
Automatic and simplified authentification for employees
Every education, research or cultural establishment that is eligible for the RESTENA network can allow its employees to authenticate themselves automatically and very simply on websites that use eduID.
Simplified access is not limited to Luxembourgian services, such as the Restena Foundation's FileSender or URL Shortener services. Quite the contrary. The local identifier created for users is also valid on all websites that have subscribed to the eduID service via other national research and education networks (NREN).

Some useful information
- eduID is a Single Sign-On solution: when connecting to the first website protected by eduID, the identifier used remains valid on all websites visited during the session that are also protected by eduID. When the browser is closed, this results in automatic disconnection from all eduID resources to which the user is connected.
- eduID brings together identities on a pan-European basis, and all the national initiatives are grouped within the eduGAIN service (www.edugain.org)
- The Restena Foundation is the national coordinator of the eduID service in Luxembourg.
